Introducing our new TIPS Fraud Module

Over the past few years, through our work with some of the UK’s leading train operating companies (TOCs), one thing has become increasingly clear. Fare fraud isn’t standing still.

Traditional offences such as ticketless travel and short ticketing aren’t going away, but they no longer paint the whole picture. As technology has evolved, methods of fraud have become much more sophisticated, with fraudulent digital tickets, false refund claims and repeat offending becoming increasingly common.

However, as operators invest in larger in-house revenue protection teams, investigations are often still managed using outdated, fragmented processes, spreadsheets, emails and paper records.

As fraud evolves, the tools used to investigate it need to evolve too.

That’s exactly why we’ve developed the new TIPS Fraud Module.

What is the TIPS Fraud Module, and why we developed it?

Designed in collaboration with the wider rail industry, the module provides train operating companies with a dedicated, centralised platform for managing fraud investigations from start to finish. Whether used as a standalone solution or integrated with our existing TIPS platform, it gives investigation teams a structured, auditable way to manage cases from the initial investigation through to settlement or prosecution.

By replacing fragmented processes with one centralised, auditable system, the TIPS Fraud Module helps train operators resolve cases faster, build stronger evidence files and recover more lost revenue. Investigation teams gain a clear view of every case, spend less time on repetitive administration and work more consistently from initial referral through to settlement or prosecution, ultimately improving operational efficiency while protecting the revenue needed to support Britain’s railways.

One of the biggest challenges we hear from operators is that valuable information is often spread across multiple systems. Evidence, correspondence, financial information and case notes can all exist in different places, making investigations more time-consuming than they need to be.

The TIPS Fraud Module brings this information together in one place, giving investigation teams greater visibility across every stage of a case. By streamlining case management and reducing administration, it helps teams focus on building stronger, court-ready evidence files where required, rather than spending valuable time navigating disconnected systems.

How it can help you

Importantly, we haven’t designed the software to change the way experienced investigators work. Revenue protection will always rely on skilled professionals applying judgement, legislation and experience to every case. Our role is to provide technology that supports those teams by removing repetitive administration, improving consistency and making information easier to access when it’s needed.

Because every operator works slightly differently, the module is fully configurable. Teams can tailor fraud categories, evidence requirements and correspondence to suit their own processes, while built-in automation helps improve data security and supports GDPR compliance.

For us, the launch of the TIPS Fraud Module is another step in the ongoing evolution of the TIPS platform and our commitment to supporting the rail industry as revenue protection continues to change.

Fraud investigations are becoming more complex, but with the right systems in place, they don’t have to become more difficult.

Innovation is driven by the challenges the industry faces. Our TIPS Fraud Management Module has been designed by the industry, for the industry. This innovation wouldn’t have been possible without the support and collaboration of our DfTO and train operator clients, who worked alongside us throughout its development to ensure it solves genuine operational challenges.

If you’d like to find out more about the TIPS Fraud Module or discuss the challenges your business is facing around fraud investigation and revenue protection, we’d be delighted to help. Get in touch with us today at sales@raspberrysoftware.com.

Fare evasion is a longstanding challenge across the entire spectrum of public transport, but not all networks are created equal. Research shows that the tram network often records significantly higher rates of fare evasion than rail. As the rail industry moves toward public ownership, we believe there is a real opportunity to drive greater integration […]
